Jim Carrey Pays Tribute to The Mask Director Chuck Russell

Jim Carrey has shared a heartfelt tribute following the passing of The Mask director Chuck Russell, remembering the filmmaker who helped create one of the most beloved comedies of the 1990s.
Russell, who directed the 1994 blockbuster The Mask, died unexpectedly at his home in the San Diego area on July 22. He was 74. A cause of death has not yet been announced.
Jim Carrey and Russell worked together on The Mask, the film that became a worldwide phenomenon and helped establish Jim Carrey as one of Hollywood's biggest stars. The movie also introduced Cameron Diaz in her feature film debut and remains one of the most iconic comedy films of the decade. Released in 1994, The Mask grossed more than $351 million worldwide and continues to be regarded as one of the defining comic book adaptations of the era.
Jim Carrey Statement
Jim Carrey shared the following statement in tribute to his longtime collaborator:
"I consider it a privilege to have worked with Chuck Russell, who, during the shooting of The Mask, created an ebullient, childlike atmosphere of wonder and camaraderie on his set. The entire cast and crew were touched and inspired by his playfulness. Every one of us has been blessed for many years by that buoyant and timeless moment. I consider The Mask one of the jewels of my creative life. Thank you, Chuck."
The tribute reflects the close creative partnership the two shared while making The Mask, a film that remains one of the highlights of both Jim's and Russell's careers.
Just a month ago, Chuck Russell reflected on The Mask in an interview while promoting the 30th anniversary 4K release of Eraser. The director said he would love to return to the franchise if Jim Carrey was involved, calling the idea "lovely" if the right story could be found.
Russell's comments came after both Jim Carrey and Cameron Diaz had also expressed openness to returning to The Mask under the right creative circumstances. While no sequel is currently in development, his remarks gave fans renewed hope that the original team might one day reunite.
