I just now got home from going to see The Majestic after work. I am in complete shock over this movie. I loved everything about it. (surprise surprise LOL). I could not begin to describe Jim's performance. I have been a Jim fan for a long time now (11 years to be exact) and I have never walked away from one of his movies feeling this moved. He was absolutely amazing. More and more proof of his talent, what he is really capable of, and my admiration of his accomplishments. I will be going to see it again very soon.

Love & Humor,

Marissa

"If you give up on your dreams, what's left?"-Jim Carrey

Click on Jim To See My Website!!

I just watched the movie at Galaxy Theater in Hollywood (not too far from Grauman's). I was upset to find out that the movie was not showing at Grauman's... of all places! Drats Oh, sorry I missed ya, Mon and Dana! I had a lot of trouble getting there cuz of the traffic... oy!

First off, before those cool set reports and exclusive set pics surfaced at JCO since last year, I - and I'm sure others too - read the early draft of the script, "The Bijou". I loved the script; there's romance, a touch of comedy, intense drama and heartwarming moments. Michael Sloane (the writer) wrote a great story and I loved it so much, I read it almost all the time. I was hoping that some of my fave moments from the script would show up on film. Unfortunately, some didn't and yeah, I was kinda actually disappointed

I'm not gonna spoil the movie, but here are some things that did bother me; along with the title change ("Bijou" to "Majestic") some character's personality changed, like Bob Lefertt and Emett (originally called "Old Tim" who stuttered alot and he had a cat, not a dog). Some dialogues changed too, notably Pete's speech during the HUAC court room scene (The script version was shorter, but more moving). My biggest problem were the scenes itself. Sure, they're all nice and all but I was expecting to see the ones I read from the script. I found myself muttering, "Oh, they cut it out... Man, this is different... Whoa! That's not in there!" The additional scenes and sequences was a surprise to me, which was pretty good.

I loved the movie overall, and Jim's performance just blew me away ("Wow... he's so cute here *insert giddy giggle*" ). I think I would've embraced "The Majestic" as my #1 fave JC movie if I never read the script. Currently, it is but it's just these little things that bothered me. Now I know how an avid Harry Potter reader fan feels after the movie; I like the movie, but I wished it stayed more true to the writing... I still love ya, Jimmy!

Hey Sheila, we also saw it at Galaxy, guess you sat a row behind us! Oops! I'm so sorry, but we had to head to Hollywood to not miss the showing, so we couldn't wait any longer for you.

I completely agree with you about The Majestic, some script changes were not for the better, but beside of that, the movie was wonderful. His performance was breathtaking. Not to mention his looks...

Dana, who to most was more a psycho than a therapist

Sorry too about the rendezvous mess. I hope that at least the front desk gave you our note, Sheila.

It's unbelievable that Grauman's didn't feature "The Majestic". Of all places, I would have thought this one was fundamental.

I liked the movie and I think Jim Carrey is outstanding in a role that was just so difficult because for most of the story he is grasping for an identity, and working from what the other characters feed him on his alleged personality (which isn't even his but Luke's). I guess this is what some critics failed to understand. Maybe they were also expecting him to go on some trademark Carreyisms, but he couldn't of course, as it would have been totally out of place.

The box-office results were predictable in a way, although I was hoping it'd have fared better. The timing, even if I know has to do with Oscar season, was wrong. It was obvious the movie was going to be steam-rolled by "Lord Of The Rings". This is a simple, charming movie that happens to have as leading man, a world famous mega-star. But it's still a simple, naive even movie, regardless of that. Some critics also failed to see this. Are they perhaps too encased on hip cynicism to enjoy something like "The Majestic"? They were upset at the fact that the movie isn't historically correct, they were upset that Peter didn't know who he was, but remembered movie lines, they were upset that the characters were archetypal movie types, they were upset at the predictable plot, and they were even upset that Lawson was just too perfect looking. But I ask this, does it really matter? When going into a movie like "The Majestic" should we expect to have cold reasoning and perfect logic all around? And would have been any point in watching it if it did?

But "The Majestic" isn't a perfect movie, in my opinion. It lacks something, and I wish I could fully grasp what it is. At the moment I'm inclined to think that in a way it failed to convey a fundamental aspect of the story, which is the magic of cinema. Sure, Martin Landau gives a memorable speech addressing this, in a greatly performed scene, but somehow... somehow I think the Majestic should have had a personality of its own. It should have felt like the theater was a living character too. Maybe it's me, but I didn't feel that, and I love movies, I've loved them for practically all my life. Perhaps Darabont didn't want to resort to cinematography or lighting tricks to convey this magic, and we'll have to respect his choice, but maybe it would have made all the difference.

And the promotion of this movie, could that have been more wrongly done? Starting with that awful, misleading poster, which by the way, seemed to be the only promotional item that was highly featured everywhere. What can an ordinary, non Carrey-fan, moviegoer expect of the movie just by that poster? The studio was apparently relying heavily on Carrey's name, but he doesn't even look like himself on the poster. There's a wonderful chemistry between Jim Carrey and Laurie Holden throughout the movie but the romance angle was totally neglected in the promotion strategy. Even the movie magic angle was totally neglected during promotion, as a matter of fact, and what was left wasn't hardly enough to convince audiences to choose it over the other heavy competitors.

Regardless, I still have hope good word-of-mouth will arise and slowly get it in people's attention. We'll see. But if it doesn't, what problems are to be expected? Basically it will be more difficult for Carrey to negotiate roles in non comedic projects, and the odds for an Oscar have also plummeted as well (if you care for that at all).

Mon
"The 'darker' side of comedy is a redundant statement."-Jim Carrey
Edited by: JCOAdmin at: 12/26/01 5:06:05 pm

Whoa, I sat in the back row also and there weren't alot of people there. If you guys caught the 12:15 pm showing, you must've heard someone yelling frantically to her mom to stop taking pics during the movie (that was me ) And Mon, I did get the note. When we arrived, we missed ya by 15 minutes! Yikes! Whoo... lotsa stories to share huh?

Anyways, I've just watched "The Majestic" for the third time (Funny, it's my first time in the U.S. of A and this is the only movie I've watched). I have to agree with you, Mon. "The Majestic" didn't fare so well with all audiences as anticipated. It came in at a wrong time (October or November would've been perfect) and it had super tough competition ("Lord of the Rings"... you can't stop the hype, literally). The promotion must've thrown people off cuz it concentrated more on Peter Appleton's struggle with mistaken identity rather than the magic of movies and the important history of the "Red Scare." Yes, it did mislead people and it appears to have disappointed them instead of suprising them. Ouch

"The Majestic" will get some recognition. And, despite how it's doing, something like this couldn't - and shouldn't - stop Jim from taking chances. It's cool of him to take risks; we're appreciating him even more And man! He was just, oh, adorable in "The Majestic"

*TaKe KaRe NoW |

| BuH ~ BYe THeN*

I've seen the movie twice so far, so I'd thought I'd add my two cents about it.

Overall, it was a very good movie. It made me want to spend more time with all of the people in Lawson (an important achievement for a 2 1/2 hour movie). I actually thought it should be a little longer (and not just for more Jim time!!). I thought the transition from Peter regaining his memory to him being found by the authorities was too abrupt. I would have liked to see them spend a little time with his internal struggle about how to tell the town's people that he wasn't their long lost hero.

Jim's performance was stunning -- I thought he conveyed Luke/Peter's initial confusion after arriving in Lawson with great believability. I loved how he slowly transitioned to "Luke" as time passed, and his chemistry with Adele was very good. You could see "Luke" being the most comfortable when they were on screen together.

I'll be going back this weekend, and bringing more of my friends along.

Nancy

I am sooo confused I have not seen the movie yet but hey give me a break I am 14 I can't just get up and see a movie (that really sux) But I was reading an interview with Laurie Holden on JAM! movies and in part it says: "Holden plays Adele Stanton, Luke's girlfriend. The first time Adele meets Peter she takes him to a cliff where she and Luke had professed their love a decade earlier" I thought it was at the lighthouse not a cliff....lol im sooo strange but hey i am bored!!
