The pilgrims, who celebrated the first thanksgiving in America, were Christians fleeing religious persecution from their native England. Their religious affiliation was with the Puritans. They were called Puritans because they wanted to purify the church of elaborate ceremonies and return to a simple order of worship and simple organization.

In 1608 they fled from England to Holland to avoid Persecution. Though they found a peaceful place to practice their faith, this fringe group of believers knew their new home was not to be found in Europe. So they decided to leave Holland and travel to the new world of America. Their trip was financed by a group of English investors. It was agreed that the pilgrims would be given passage and supplies in exchange for them working for their backers for 7 years. In September 1620, 44 pilgrims and 66 crew members sailed from Plymouth England heading to Virginia. The trip was cold and damp and took 65 days. The rough waters of the North Atlantic Sea veered them off course. In November 1620 they landed, not in warm Virginia, but the cold northeast-Plymouth, Massachusetts.

The first winter was devastating to the pilgrims and of the 110 who left England, less than 50 survived the first winter. Destiny stepped in on March 16, 1621. An Indian brave named Squanto walked into the Plymouth settlement. The pilgrims were frightened until the Indian welcomed them in English. The Indian friendship and help was enormous to the pilgrims. It was Squanto who taught the pilgrims how to tap the maple trees for sap. He taught them which plants were poisonous and which could be used for medicine. He taught them how to plant corn. The harvest that Fall was very successful and the Pilgrims found themselves with enough food to put away for the winter. The Pilgrims had much to celebrate. The had build homes in the wilderness, raised enough crops to keep them alive during the winter and were at peace with their Indian neighbors. They had taken a chance, beaten the odds and it was time to celebrate.

The pilgrim governor William Branford proclaimed a day of thanksgiving to be shared by all of the colonist and the neighboring native Americans. 90 Indians came to the celebration which lasted for 3 days. The custom of an annually celebrated day of thanksgiving continued after the harvest through the years. In 1863, President Abraham Lincoln appointed a national day of Thanksgiving. Since then, each president has issued a Thanksgiving Day proclamation, designating the fourth Thursday of each November as a national day of Thanks.

Happy Thanksgiving!!

My Great GGGGG Grandpa way back

Postby Canadian Jayne » Wed Dec 01, 2004 5:30 pm

My GGGGGGGGGrandpa was John Robinson who
didn't make it on the ships, he died in Leyden, Holland before he could go,
but his children went, I think
they were aboard the ship, Anne, not sure it's in my book.
I was actually just reading about him a few days ago.
