When it came to filming "Lemony Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate Events," the moviemakers realized they couldn't do justice to the cobwebby world of Daniel Handler's children's books on a small set. They decided to shoot it on gigantic, ghoulish soundstages that are as wild and crazy as ... well, the movie's star, Jim Carrey.

So the movie's look exists somewhere between 'Mary Poppins' and [the 1955 thriller] 'The Night of the Hunter.'

"The Night of the Hunter" is creepy as hell. It's an old Robert Mitchum movie in which he terrorizes a family after his release from prison. A really dark, black & white film and it's one of my all time faves. If you get a chance to see it, watch it. they show it on Turner Classic Movies alot.
